Helmut Niegemann
Dr Helmut Niegemann is Professor Emeritus at the University of Erfurt (former Chair of Learning and New Media, 2003-2012); he was Senior Professor of Business Education from 2014 to 2025, and is Honorary Professor of Educational Technology at Saarland University since 2016. Before taking up the chair in Erfurt, he was Professor of Media Design/Digital Media at the Technical University of Ilmenau, and before that Head of the ‘Instructional Design’ department at the German Institute for Distance Learning Research (DIFF) at the University of Tübingen (1997-2001). Between 1993 and 1986 and from 1989 to 1997, he worked as a substitute professor, project manager, assistant professor, and research assistant at the universities of Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Saarbrücken. From 1986 to 1989, H. Niegemann worked for a publishing company in Mannheim and was a freelance lecturer (IT), author, instructional designer and technical editor. He studied educational science, educational psychology, psychology and later computer science at Saarland University, where he obtained his doctorate in 1978 and his habilitation in 1993. His work focuses on educational technology, instructional design and instructional psychology. In addition to teaching and learning with interactive media, his teaching has recently focused on qualitative and quantitative methods of empirical research. He is the author and (co-)editor of several books on e-learning, instructional design and educational technology.
